The Kaharoa Kokako Trust was named as Supreme Winner in the 2010 Green Ribbon Awards

Green Ribbon Award ceremonyThe award was announced by Hon. Nick Smith, Minister for the Environment, at an award ceremony in the Beehive on 3 June.

We are delighted to be honoured with this national award.

It recognises the hard work of all our volunteers and supporters over many years.

We are planning a celebration on Sunday, 20 June involving a bush walk and breakfast.

Kokako movements

kokako movementsSeven kokako were captured at Kaharoa and released on Secretary Island down in Fiordland this Spring.

Ten birds were moved from Rotoehu to the same southern location.

This is a significant project by the Department of Conservation as it marks the return of kokako to the South Island, where they have previously become extinct.

The Kaharoa Kokako Trust is excited to be part of this project and we are delighted to be in the position to contribute in meaningful ways to the national recovery of kokako.

Trust ecologist, Carmel Richardson, accompanied our kokako down to Fiordland on their six-hour journey. She describes the experience of releasing the birds on Secretary Island as one of the best experiences of her life.

The birds have been tagged and their progress will be monitored as they settle into their new home.

We would like to thank all of our volunteers and DoC staff for making this translocation possible.
